Telephone Preference Service registrations top 10m numbers

Telephone Preference Service registrations have now hit 10m, with the chairman of the service Colin Lloyd assessing that the dramatic increase is down to widespread consumer discontent with the telemarketing industry.

Late in 2005 BT's launched its Privacy service, which registers consumers on the TPS supported by an ad campaign featuring Jeremy Clarkson.

Recent Mori research showed that awareness of the TPS has risen to 50% from 41% in July 2004, and that 84% of consumers are satisfied with the service.

Registrations on the TPS have increased dramatically over the last 18 months, as awareness of the service has grown.

The implications for businesses are starting to grow.  The opportunities to outbound telephone potential customers is shrinling and other channels need to be found.
